Waffles (a leavened batter or dough cooked between two plates, patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression, Wikipedia 2014). Ever since A&W closed its door in Singapore those years ago, the waffles scene (aside from Prima Deli bake shops) has been rather quiet until the emergence cafes in Singapore these couple of years.
So where's your favourite waffles these days? My bet would be answers ranging from Creamier to that of Wimbly Loo's. Divided opinions? Yeap, so now, I'll share my favourite spots for this medieval European item.
1. Hatter Street (4 Hands)
Considerably light and crispy. Great batter with really good pandan ice cream. I am told that you can request for more salted caramel sauce to go with the waffle. One up for kovan.

2. Salted Caramel Artisan Ice Cream (3 Hands)
Used to be even better. However standards have dipped since it first opened almost half a decade back. I feel its due to the lack of consistency. Some days it would be really crisp and flavorful, at times, it would be a tad doughly and soft. Thankfully the good times outnumbers the bad. Still the best around thomson.

3. Stateland Cafe (3Hands)
Another cafe where the waffles have been a hit. Instead of the usual plain waffles, the guys in stateland serve up flavoured waffles. Take your pick from a variety of original, toffee nut, red velvet, and chocolate waffles. Would say that the toffee nut and red velvet are slightly better. The waffles here have more texture and are served crisp. However, recently, i felt that the waffles are less consistent. A couple of times the waffles plated up were less than perfect.

4. Sin Lee Foods (5Hands)
This provision shop converted cafe serves really good iron waffles. Although the batter is much doughier than many places, Sin Lee has got it right. A doughy soft centre complement the crispy outside. To top it off, a fried chicken (yes you haven't heard me wrong. a superb large piece of fried chicken) is placed on top of the waffle. To reduce your guilt, coleslaw is also given. Who knew that having a fried chicken with waffles could be so satisfying.

5. Creamier/ Sunday Folks (4Hands)
Coming in two squares, Creamier and its cousin, Sunday Folks serve up this thick yet crisp waffles. Hugely popular amongst cafe goers, the line at these two ice cream parlours can be snaking long. Personally, I find the waffles ordinary but when complemented with their ice creams, it really is a wonderful after dinner treat.

6. Assembly Coffee (5 Hands + afew more)
Personally, the best waffle in Singapore at this moment. Choose from two different flavours - Salted Caramel and Earl Grey. I would say the salted caramel is my pick. How do i describe it - just right. The batter is neither to doughy or thin. The fragrance of the waffle is there, That eggy and yeasty taste, yet not overwhelming. Served up crisp, with a very good ice cream, opinions may differ but I am their no. 1 fan. My go to place when that waffle craving starts to creep in.

This concludes my take on the waffles I felt were the better ones around. Do let me know if there are others to be tried. Special mentions should also go to Wimbly Lu and Shroove Tuesdays. however, it has been awhile since I last visited these places hence my lack of pictures to cover the two cafes. Waffles like any other food can vary in opinion. Have you tried these places yet?
